The fall season drew to a close for the No. 15-ranked Pepperdine women’s golf team as it was eliminated in round two of the inaugural Collegiate Match Play Championship Monday. It will now take a break to regroup until Feb. 9 when it begins its spring season at the Northop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes.
The Waves fell to No. 14-seeded Stanford in a head to head matchup at the Dye Course at Barefoot Resort in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Stanford advances to the third round of the consolation bracket with the 2-1-2 win.
Stanford clinched the victory on the par-72 course when sophomore Carolina Llano was defeated three and two. Llano is ranked No. 3 in the nation in the Golfweek/Sagarin ranking. She is averaging 71.22 over nine rounds.
Rookie Catherine Woods was bested three and two as well.
Pepperdine’s lone point came from freshman Eileen Vargas when she took the match against Wendra Liang, four and three. Juniors Rachel Kyono and Maria Arenas both halved their matches against the Cardinal.
In Sunday’s first round, Pepperdine faced No. 6-seeded Georgia. Both teams took two matches and halved the fifth match. The Lady Bulldogs took the win over the Waves because their two wins were said to be more decisive than Pepperdine’s. Llano had a four-and-two victory while Vargas also defeated her opponent with a two-and-one win. Georgia got it two victories over Kyono and Woods, four and three, and three and two, respectively. Arenas halved her match against Whitney Wade.
The Waves look to get back on track in February after having their run of 18 consecutive top 10 finishes snapped at the Pepsi Stanford Intercollegiate in Stanford in October.
