West Coast Conference Briefs

Streaking Dons can’t beat the Zags

Ronny Turiaf scored 24 points and hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds for his eighth career double-double, and Head Coach Mark Few reached the career 100-win plateau as Gonzaga University fought off a tough University of San Francisco squad for an 82-71  victory Saturday.

The Bulldogs (19-6, 10-1) won for the 21st straight time against WCC competition in The Kennel in front of another sellout crowd while the Dons (11-12, 6-4) fell to Gonzaga for the 10th straight time.

Junior Blake Stepp was the Zags’ leading scoring with 27 points, while the Dons’ Darrell Tucker continued his impressive play, registering team highs of 26 points and seven boards off the bench. John Cox had 16 and Shamell Stallworth 11 for USF, the only starters in double digits.

Waves announcer wins WCC honor

Pepperdine radio play-by-play sportscaster Al Epstein was honored with this year’s WCC Sam Goldman Award for outstanding contributions to the WCC. Epstein is currently in his 17th season as the “Voice of the Waves.”

He began his affiliation with Pepperdine basketball during the 1985-1986 season as the color commentator, and assumed the play-by-play chores the following season. During his tenure, the Pepperdine program has advanced to post-season play 11 times, including six NCAA Tournament berths and five NIT appearances.
