WCC baseball gets things underway
In front of another capacity crowd at San Diego’s Cunningham Stadium Sunday, the defending national champion Texas Longhorns defeated USD 7-2. The win sealed a series sweep for No. 1 Texas (3-0) after a 9-7 victory Friday and a 17-4 decision Saturday.
San Diego (2-4) stranded seven runners on the afternoon and defensively allowed Texas to bang out 14 hits. Longhorn senior Dustin Majewski hit his third homerun in as many days going two-for-four with a pair of runs and RBI’s. Coming on to pitch three scoreless innings in mid-relief, Texas junior Josh Smith (1-0) earned the victory.
In other conference action, Santa Clara rallied to beat Hawaii Hilo 7-5. St. Mary’s fell to Cal Poly 6-5 in extra innings, and USF couldn’t hold off UC Riverside, falling 11-3.
USF’s Tucker is back in a big way
In basketball, San Francisco’s Darrell Tucker was named the WCC Player of the Week returning from a six-game layoff to lead USF to a 2-0 weekend.
On Friday, Tucker came off the bench to score 21 points and grab 11 boards as the Dons defeated the Waves for the first time in the last eight tries.
Against Loyola Marymount, Tucker was outstanding off the bench once again, tossing in 24 points, while grabbing another 11 boards.
