Golf tourney raises baseball money

Pepperdine’s baseball team has its annual fundraiser, a golf tournament at the Malibu Country Club, Dec. 13.

Practice on the putting green and driving range will follow 10 a.m. check-in. The shotgun start will be at 11:30 a.m.

After the tournament, there is a 4:30 p.m. dinner and awards ceremony given for all tournament participants.

The $175 entry fee includes lunch and dinner, green fees, a cart and gifts for all who take part. Tee sponsorships are also available for $200. All proceeds will be awarded to the Waves’ baseball program.

Women’s basketball snags No. 22 spot

The Pepperdine women’s basketball team was listed in the No. 22 spot in a preseason ranking by Street & Smith’s magazine, an annual specializing in reliable rankings of baseball, and college and pro women’s and men’s basketball and football.

The women have acquired a 108-48 record over the last five years, ending in NCAA Tournament berths in 2000 and 2002. They have won or tied for the West Coast Conference title three of the last five seasons, and entered post-season play for the last four years.

The No. 1, 2 and 3 spots went to Duke University, Tennessee and Louisiana State University,   respectively.

The Waves open their 2002-2003 season at home on Nov. 22 against Xavier. The 27-game schedule includes home games against Arizona, UCLA and University of Southern California, and two tournaments at Firestone Fieldhouse.
