Kids and parents alike are stepping out to make a difference this week. More than 37 countries and millions of children are participating in International Walk to School week.
International Walk to School Day is a tradition that began in 2000 and continues to grow each year. It began with just seven participating countries. Last year, 37 countries and over three million walkers came out. Even more walkers are expected this year.
The annual event gives children, parents, school teachers, and community leaders the opportunity to participate in a global experience. The goals vary community to community, but include teaching children the joys of walking and exercise, raising concern for the environment and making communities safer with less traffic.
Calabasas schools celebrated with a district-wide “Walk to School Day” on Wednesday. Here at Lupin Hill Elementary School in Calabasas, every Wednesday has been declared “Walk to School Day.” Crossing Guard Muron looked especially busy on Wednesday, but confirmed that there are always more walkers on Wednesdays. “It’s a very busy day. Very hard work today,” he said.
Whatever the reason for walking, this looks like a step in the right direction toward a more walk-able world for us all.
