Volleyball team digs pink

October 15, 2010 by Kayla Ferguson

Pepperdine’s Colleges Against Cancer Club has teamed up with the Pepperdine Athletic Department to help promote Thursday’s women’s volleyball game against Gonzaga the culminating event of Pink Week that went from Oct. 11-14. As a build up to last night’s game the past week has offered students multiple opportunities to honor and recognize loved ones who have experienced cancer in some way. Opportunities ranged from putting pink ribbons on the freedom wall to sending mammogram reminder cards to family and friends. Free pink shirts were given to the first 100 Pepperdine female students at the game and pink cupcakes as well as pink mini volleyballs were also for sale with proceeds going to the Sideout Foundation for breast cancer research.

The women’s team gave a solid performance in their first game home in almost a month. They impressed the larger-than-normal number of people in the stands by sweeping Gonzaga in three sets (25-19 25-16 and 25-12) respectively. Junior outside hitter Lilla Frederick led the team with 17 kills while Emily Cook followed behind her with 12.  The Waves outplayed the Bulldogs scoring 55 kills to Gonzaga’s 28 and no player on the Gonzaga team reached double-digits in the kills category a partial explanation for the Waves sweeping success.

The Waves’ dominance was evident throughout the match as they never trailed.  Their domineering offense led to frequent timeout calls by the Bulldogs who were never able to pull the momentum in their favor.  The women’s volleyball team looks to continue their success Oct. 16 in Malibu at 1 p.m. against Portland a part of the Waves Weekend celebration.
