SAN DIEGO Calif.– Pepperdine men’s basketball team as the Waves were beaten 62-47 in a West Coast Conference game on Thursday evening. Pepperdine (4-14 1-1) had won three of its previous four games including a WCC-opening victory over rival Loyola Marymount last weekend. USD (11-7 3-0) beat the Waves for the sixth straight time at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Waves were held to 35.2% shooting for the game and had a season-low 17 first-half points. The Toreros last year’s WCC Tournament champions have allowed no more than 50 points in their first three WCC contests. Sophomore forward Mychel Thompson (Ladera Ranch Calif./Stoneridge Prep) scored a team-high 15 points while freshman center Corbin Moore (Cypress Calif./Los Alamitos HS) had eight points and nine rebounds. No one else on the squad had more than five points however. Thompson and Moore shot a combined 9-for-16 while the rest of the team went 10-for-38. San Diego shot 48.9% as a team and got 16 points from Trumaine Johnson 14 points from Gyno Pomare and 12 points from Roberto Mafra. The Waves got off to a rough start falling behind 9-0 and then 13-2 with a little more than 14 minutes left in the first half. Pepperdine made one of its first eight shots and had committed three turnovers at that point. The Waves followed that with a nice 8-2 run to cut USD’s lead to 15-10 with 11 1/2 minutes to go. But Pepperdine went through another drought failing to score for more than 7 1/2 minutes as the squad missed six shots and made four turnovers. USD meanwhile reeled off 12 straight points to go ahead 27-10. Thompson scored five of his nine first-half points in the final minutes but USD went into the break with a 30-17 lead. No one besides Thompson scored more than two points in the first half for Pepperdine. The Waves shot 26.9% in the first half while the Toreros hit 41.7% of their shots. The Toreros began the second half by building an 18-point lead at 38-20 but Thompson hit two three-pointers in a 9-2 run that cut the deficit to 11 at 40-29 with 11:30 left. USD pulled away from there however eventually taking a 56-35 lead with 6:40 to play as Johnson scored seven points in a 9-2 run. The Waves ended the game on a 10-4 run to close the gap a bit. One bright spot for the Waves was a +12 rebounding margin (37-25) which included 14 offensive rebounds (five by Moore). Of the 11 players that saw action for the Waves eight were freshmen or sophomores and seven weren’t on the roster last year. Sophomore forward Jonathan Dupre’ (Houston Texas/Marshall HS/Collin County CC) returned after missing five straight games with a sprained ankle. Dupre’ who last played on Dec. 20 against Georgia Tech scored four points in 19 minutes. The Waves continue WCC play at Saint Mary’s on Saturday (Jan. 17) at 5 p.m.
