Student Government Association unanimously passed a resolution approving a rewritten constitution that officials said promotes greater efficiency within the senate. To become official the constitution requires ratification by the student body. Students will vote on the constitution next week on election ballots.
The new constitution rewritten by the General Judicial Council of SGA eliminated various aspects that members decided were unnecessary or inefficient including housing senators and the election rules committee. The General Judicial Committee will absorb the election rules committee’s duties.
“We made the barriers to budgeting a lot more lenient so it’s easier to fund things and it’s easier to use more funds for the students Freshman Class President Karels said. Overall we just made the constitution more lenient so with each student government that comes in they can have more responsibility over how they run their senate.”
The General Judicial Commitee comprised of senators senior Josh Wymyczak junior Alexander Pennekamp sophomore Stephen Anthony and freshman Karels who worked over a course of five months to rewrite the new constitution.
At the meeting senior class officers also informed SGA on the progress they have made on Senior Week the goal of which is to raise awareness for the Senior Challenge a student-led campaign to raise funds for the school. The senior gift is a bench seating area in the new quad outside the Elkins Auditorium.
“The reasoning behind it was we wanted to give back to the building since we as seniors didn’t have an opportunity to use it said Senior Class President Jennifer Young. We wanted to better the campus and we want the rest of the student campus to benefit from it.”
The seating area will also feature a commemorative plaque that includes the seniors’ well wishes to the classes to come.
Some seniors said they are happy the class is donating something future students can use.
“I think it’s a very positive thing I’m glad were doing it said John Norton. I think it’s one of the better out of the last few [senior gifts].
Participation for funding is not limited to students. Parents of seniors received letters saying soliciting contributions to the gift in honor of their son or daughter’s name.
“We’re really going more for participation instead of money we can raise Young said.
Anyone who wishes to contribute to the fund, regardless of the amount, will be entered in a raffle to win a Nobu gift certificate.
