With no resolutions to consider at Wednesday’s meeting Student Government Association discussed the student response to last week’s town halls.
Requests for extended visitation hours 24-hour library access improved parking and more dances and concerts were the dominant results from questionnaires SGA members distributed at town halls.
However a few less practical suggestions also stood out.
“Another thing they want [is] a staircase in the middle of dorm road going from upper to lower said Freshman Senator Bobby Hall.
The results also indicated many students’ ignorance about the role of SGA, according to Sophomore President Christopher Bakke.
As far as what people think SGA does [it’s] kind of hit or miss said Bakke.
To get more input from students, representatives suggested distributing questionnaires to students on a regular basis.
I think it might be a really good idea if every other week we put out surveys said Junior Senator Katie Sterjnholm. I don’t really think people come to the office. ‘Where does SGA get their feedback?’ I got asked that like three times.”
In addition to discussing the results of the questionnaires guest speakers Dean of Students Mark Davis and Associate Dean of Students Tabatha Jones praised SGA’s efforts this year.
“I think this has been one of the best years for SGA ever Davis said.
Davis also expressed plans for the HAWC Coffee Shop to be moved to the bottom floor and expanded.
Hall asked Davis for his opinion on his resolution to sell energy drinks on campus.
I actually support your resolution … because I think right now we’re just inconsistent to serve the high octane caffeine in the [Waves Café] and say ‘Oh but you can’t drink a Red Bull'” Davis said.
After executive and senate reports SGA discussed ways to boost school spirit and reasons for low attendance at athletic events.
“I don’t think it’s going to matter what we do … pumping in money giving people shirts the type of people that apply to this school don’t apply for sports reasons Bakke said. The reason why people come here isn’t to be part of this big sports legacy program.”
However SGA members agreed that for such a small school Pepperdine offers an exceptional athletics program.
