In response to the staff editorial “Bring student body together with better spring concert I have to admit I was shocked by the immature and unprofessional way in which this piece was presented; not only did it discredit a University sponsored event that people having been working hard to put on but it also challenged the talent integrity and overall success of the artists who will be playing on Tuesday March 9.
I chose Pepperdine because of its emphasis on service and for its Christian background and it saddens me that this editorial is not only attacking a very worthwhile event but is further dividing our student body. This editorial suggests that any student who would attend this concert ascribes to the stereotype of “wanting “flashbacks of braces acne and awkwardness set to cheesy girl rock music.”” This is not only horribly offensive but it is also just evidence of a lack of understanding of the purpose of this event and a lack of knowledge of the bands coming to perform. I am well acquainted with the music of all three of these well-known Christian artists and have seen them perform live; they are not only incredibly talented but their music and message is specifically directed at an older crowd. How unwelcoming will Pepperdine seem to these bands if they find out about this? Let’s maintain our credibility.
I would encourage the author of this editorial and all the student body to do their research before publishing such detrimental comments. Sarah KetelhutFreshmanAssistant to the Concert ChairEmcee of Spring Concert 2010
