Club fills musical void

ooking for something fun to do? Eager to get away from campus for a night, but don’t feel like driving far or spending too much money? In the mood to dance, have a laugh or just enjoy a mellow night out with some friends?

Then you’re in luck. The Canyon Club is a hip, new club located just off the 101 freeway at the Kanan exit in Agoura Hills.

“We are the best alternative to clubs in Hollywood,” promotional director Scott Dudelson said.

Averaging 700 people a night, the club entertains various acts throughout the week that appeal to a wide variety of tastes and ages.

“I’m in my twenties and my sister is in her forties, but we can both go there and have a good time,” said Kelly Zimmermann, Malibu resident and club patron. “It’s a place that has a vast majority of age groups and people, which makes it a lot of fun.”

Currently, Thursday is the most happening night. If you are feeling funky and ready to get your groove on, don’t miss Boogie Knights. Your senses will be sent into overdrive and your feet will take over. Wednesday is another popular night, consisting of comedy — if that is what you are in the mood for — or a new series that brings acts from the Los Angeles area to the valley. It is an acoustic experience each week uniting an eclectic mix of styles with a cohesive theme joining them together.

“These are the acts that I think are the best,” Dudelson said.

Dinner is also served at this venue, but requires advance reservations.

The Canyon Club, open a little more than a year, is a revolutionary concept that is finally beginning to fill the musical void at the Los Angeles/Ventura County border.

“I think it is probably the classiest club I have ever been to,” Dudelson said.

Hours vary nightly, and the cover charge is usually anywhere from $5 to $10. Concert events may be higher.

Depending on your musical preference, some of the upcoming bands you might be interested in checking out include: Air Supply (Feb. 15), Venice (Feb. 22), The Spazmatics (March 2), Eddie Money (March 22), Chely Wright (April 13), Berlin (June 7) and Styx (July 26).

The Spazmatics are a wacky group that will transport you back through the years to the 80s for a totally far-out time. After the concerts, dancing continues as a DJ takes over.

If you are 21 or older and looking for a place to release a little stress, let loose or chill with friends — you should shimmy your way over to The Canyon Club for a night to remember.

“It’s a fun place where you can dress up classy, funky or goofy depending on your mood,” Zimmermann said.

The club is located at 28912 Roadside drive in Agoura Hills. For more information, call (818) 879-5016 or visit their Web site at http://www.canyonclub.net.
