The Waves Women’s soccer team conceded a late goal once again this time to the UCI Anteaters resulting in a 1-1 tie on Friday Sept. 10.
After a hard fought matchup junior forward Laura Cole netted a beautiful free kick from just outside the box. “I just kind of went for it Cole said after the game. I drove it right footed towards the back post and it went in.”
However the Waves lacked cohesion in their attack and defense that resulted in them being outplayed for the majority of the match. Head Coach Tim Ward commented that UCI was probably “the best team we’ve played all year.”
With five minutes left in the game the Anteaters found their way through the defense and in front of the net tieing the game 1-1. “We had numbers there but the ball shouldn’t have been there commented Ward. We must do a better job exploiting the space with energy.”
After two low-intensity 10-minute overtimes the score remained 1-1 resulting in the Waves’ first tie of the season.
Junior forward/defender Myriah Stockman said “we need to be able to lock it down. Playing in overtime was a good lesson for the team and I’m glad they younger players can add it to their repertoire. But we need to be able to put it away.”
Sophomore forward Anisa Guajardo responded differently. “We usually have a good response after games that don’t go the way we want. Sunday will be a different kind of game.”
Ward felt the Waves’ energy “could have been better.” And he hopes to come into the game against Dartmouth a little differently.
Pepperdine faces off against Dartmouth (1-1-1) at home on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Waves and The Big Green have never faced each other before.
