This past weekend proved monumental for women’s volleyball as it took two wins against No. 19 Kentucky and Louisville.
“The goal of the tournament was to see where [the team is] against the best,” Head Coach Nina Matthies said. “Their play surpassed my expectations.”
Entering the game versus Kentucky (5-2), the Waves won in three sets. Junior Katie Messing broke personal records in the match with a career-high six blocks and a match-best 14 kills.
The team started out strong at 6-2, and won 26-24.
In the second set, the Waves had up to an eight-point lead on the Wildcats and closed the set at 25-18.
The third set ended in a tight battle, but the Waves pulled through 25-23.
Following the Waves victory on Friday, they faced the Louisville Cardinals and won again 3-1.
Senior Kelley Larsen had a career-high with 19 kills.
Today the Waves open in conference play versus Santa Clara at 7 p.m. in Firestone Fieldhouse.
