If U2’s guitar parts, Pink Floyd’s bass lines and The Killers’ lyrics were to have a musical baby, they would sound like Timsh’l.
Timsh’l, a band that consists of juniors Jared Taylor, Jacob Williams, Kai de Becker and Davis Savage, will be playing at the Whisky A Go-Go Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The band will be opening up for a new band made up of members of Jane’s Addiction, Great White and Whitesnake called The Perkins/Tichy/Devin Experiment. Faded Red, Crashing Star, Portrait On Fire and Jimmy Allan Sine will also be playing.
Band leader Jared Taylor shared his excitement to play at the “fantastic” venue again.
“We’ve played at the Whisky once before, and it was a great event. We drew nearly 70 people there to see us, and we’d like to accomplish something similar this Saturday,” he said. “We are are very excited to return to their stage – –with hopefully a good sound man, of course.”
The band started with a jam session between Taylor and Williams during their freshman year.
“We would come up with musical ideas/grooves, I would write some lyrics, and before we knew it, we had several songs on our hands,” Taylor said. “At that point, we honestly felt that creating a band was our only option.”
The musical twosome decided to book a small acoustic tour after recruiting a bass player (de Becker) and a drummer (the band’s first drummer Noah Muscente), completing the band’s first lineup.
“Having that experience really solidified us as a band,” Taylor said.
That summer, Williams and Taylor recorded an EP in Scottsdale, Arizona. The EP was released November 2013 and is available on Spotify. Unfortunately, at that point the band lost their drummer to a study abroad program. They recruited Savage as a result.
“After Noah went abroad, Davis filled [his] shoes and [went] over and above our expectations,” Taylor said. “The rest is history.”
The band is excited for the opportunity to play some new songs at the historic venue.
“While we’d like to keep the setlist a surprise, we can promise some new music to listeners: one song that we’ve performed only once before, another that will be performed for the very first time. These newer songs have become my personal favorites,” Taylor said of the setlist.
In response to the direction the band’s music is taking, Taylor said Timsh’l hopes to “encourage” their audience.
“In addition to giving people a great time, we want to encourage our listeners,” Taylor said. “A mentor of mine once told me that good music is designed to ‘push people;’ our music seeks to accomplish just that. Our music is an attempt to ‘push’ others away from the anxiety, fear and uncertainty of our lives and into a more ecstatic, awe-inspiring state.”
Junior and friend of the band Anne Souther expressed her excitement for the band’s return to the venue.
“I’ve been looking forward to Timsh’l playing again at this venue ever since Jacob mentioned it earlier this year,” she said. “There is just something really special about watching your friends play a concert, especially when they are as kind as they are talented.”
Junior Michelle Pina said listeners are in for a good show.
“Last time I saw Timsh’l at the Whisky it was awesome,” she said. “The place was packed, and everyone knew the songs and were singing along. Definitely not going to miss this upcoming show.”
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 and can be obtained from contacting anyone in the band, or by purchase in the CM office. They accept cash or Venmo. You can also buy tickets at the door for $15.
