Rocky results for water polo

The men’s water polo team finished the weekend 1-1, falling to UCSB Saturday and defeating the United States Air Force Academy Sunday at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

The Waves lost to the Gauchos 10-17. Sophomore Luke Hewko led the team with three goals and three steals.

The Waves looked to redeem themselves against Air Force.

“We knew going in that we are the better team, so the plan was just to not play down to their level,” Hewko said.

The dominant team became obvious after four consecutive Waves goals. As the clock ran down, freshman Nicolas Candau returned Air Force’s only goal of the quarter with one of his own, sealing the 12-7 win for the Waves.

“We started to play a press defense, and it really changed everything,” Valics said.

Next, the team plays University of California Berkeley at 7 p.m. on Friday and Stanford at noon on Sunday.
