If Looks Could Employ

Spring semester is here, and with that comes internship-hunting season. You may notice that students are spending more time on their computers, frantically searching Handshake and other online websites for possible summer experiences. It is also a time when school projects are more prevalent, as you see your peers arrive to the third floor of the CCB dressed in a suit and tie.

With all of these formal presentations and interviews, you need to know how to dress. Sure, anyone can wear a black pencil skirt or plain sport coat, but the best way to make a strong first impression in this kind of setting is to radiate personality with outfit choices.

That being said, here are a few inspirational ideas (for guys and girls) to take on that internship interview this spring!

The Button-Down

Everyone needs a few solid button-downs in their wardrobe. But don’t feel like you need to limit yourself to plain white — go bold. A printed button-down says you have a fun personality and are not afraid to show your style. What’s great about button-downs is that they can also be layered. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different textures and patterns. Try layering a thin, cream sweater over a navy blue button-down. For the ladies, be sure to add a statement necklace to really pull your look together. It is simple, yet sophisticated and fun.

The Pencil Skirt

Girls, this is a key article of clothing for any working woman. While you definitely don’t have to own a plain black one, you should certainly invest in a nice one. Have fun with the print and materials: Rock a tweed skirt, or better yet, one with a slight shimmer. They pair perfectly with a blouse or even a light sweater. One of the major benefits of the pencil skirt is that they are flattering, so be sure to grab one that has an excellent fit.

The Suit

Suits — they’re not just for guys. A suit is extremely practical and stylish in the work world for women and men. Women can play with various colors, like a light pink suit with a cream blouse and some killer heels. Suits are great because they portray confidence and power, qualities that are ideal for a presentation. For men, make sure your suit is perfectly fitted and don’t be afraid to don colors other than black. Ultimately, make sure you go confidently into your interview in that suit.

The Shoes

Shoes are a great area to show your style and have fun with your look. For girls, heels are always a great option, but are definitely not the only choice. When you search for heels, look past the black pumps and seek out the turquoise shoes instead. It’s not always a good idea to forfeit comfort for style (but sometimes it is if they are cute enough). For guys, rock some leather Oxfords and pair them with colorful socks for added pizzazz, or search for a pair of two-toned shoes to really make a statement. Regardless of the type of shoes you select, choose a pair that suits your personality and makes you feel like Daddy Warbucks walking into his estate.

With these tips, you are ready to enter internship season with the utmost confidence and style. Good luck, and stay stylish!
