How to Exercise (without going near a gym!)

September 30, 2004 by Pepperdine Graphic

Fitness is an undeniable part of life at Pepperdine, whether students like it or not. Students here are surrounded by a beautiful background of mountains, the ocean and celebrities such as Pamela Anderson who parade around in workout attire. Physical well being seems to be a necessity at Pepperdine. For one thing, the hilly nature of the campus forces even the least athletic students to undergo moderate physical activity in order to attend Spanish class or get to the CCB. Though this daily “workout” may be enough for those who call shuttles and elevators friends, others would no doubt welcome ways to get exercise throughout the day rather than spending precious time cooped up in the weight room or on the track. Here are the steps to take to get a “Pepperdine workout:”

Step one: Fall out of bed
Not only will rolling out of bed never be the same, but you can get in your first dose of exercise for the day before you’ve even reached the bathroom to brush your teeth. In your still-groggy state of mind, make sure you land on your stomach and do a few full-body push-ups before really getting up.

Step two: Pull a Rocky Balboa on the communication stairs
Run up those intimidating stairs to the CCB and once at the top, throw a Rocky pumper move and jump around like you’re a world class athlete, despite the fact that you can barely breathe and everyone walking past you is wondering why you are so excited for class.

Step three: Stop yourself from falling asleep during class
You have several options:
1) Pick a spot behind the professor. Focus and refocus your eyes until the drowsiness passes.
2) Take a deep breath as you squeeze your abdominals in, exhaling as you push them back out. Repeat.
3) Flex your butt cheeks.

Step four: Eat!!!
Despite some controversy, eating can in fact be a form of exercise! Working those jaw muscles can be quite a task, especially if you’re eating food from the cafeteria.

Step five: Run your laps…. in the bookstore
Rather than trudging around the track, take a different route. Make a beeline for the candy and music aisle and peruse the various commodities as you jog around in circles until Public Safety comes to kick you out.

Step six: Become one with nature

Rather than just observing the beauty of Pepperdine’s surroundings, become more closely acquainted by running from the lizards and frolicking with the deer.

Step seven: Find ways to make yourself get up
