With spring break just behind us, I’ve been reminded of just how challenging it can be to give your body the nutrients it needs while traveling. Whether vacationing by the beach, road tripping with friends or even serving others on a missions trip, staying healthy can be a challenge.
While road tripping through the South on Pepperdine’s Project Lead, I was bombarded with all things fried. In a world where everything (and I mean everything) is buttered and broiled, it can be a challenge to eat right. However, here are some go to travel tips for how to eat healthy!
1. Don’t be afraid to ask for a food item that is not on the menu. Most restaurants are more than willing to provide a staple item as a side dish, often for a much cheaper cost. For example, most restaurants are willing to provide a piece of grilled chicken, or even salmon, as a side dish. If a restaurant provides breakfast, egg whites are always a great item to supplement a meal. Some of my favorite restaurant dishes have been entirely off the menu.
2. Snack often. Traveling makes you hungry. If you see a healthy snack, don’t be afraid to store it for later. It’s easy to go long periods of time without eating when on the road. However, long durations on an empty stomach can make you more likely to binge eat later. It’s best to snack every 2-3 hours to keep your metabolism moving and fight off intense hunger. Some great go-to snacks include yogurt, energy bars high in protein (but beware of sugar content) and, of course, vegetables.
3. Don’t fear fast food. This may come as a surprise, but oftentimes restaurants such as Chipotle, Qdoba or even Mcdonald’s have some great options. It all depends on what you order! All restaurants will offer you a side of grilled chicken if you ask for it, and most fast food restaurants provide a variety of healthier options including yogurt and granola, egg whites and fruit. Though not encouraged for every meal, this is a great option in a pinch.
4. Stay active! Go on a walk, ride a bike or take the stairs. Little things like this go a long way. If you can, try to organize activities, like hiking or horseback riding, that provide a fun and restful workout. If you can’t, maximize your opportunities to stay active and keep your body moving. Trust me, all the little things add up!
