Global Tides begins review process

January 28, 2014 by Falon Opsahl

Submissions for this year’s Global Tides magazine closed Tuesday.

Global Tides is the university’s student-led and peer-reviewed undergraduate research journal that is intended “to showcase the finest writings of Pepperdine undergraduates and further the academic standing of the university” by publishing the highest quality work that students have produced, according to senior editor Andrew Krawtz.

Students of all majors have the opportunity to submit research papers in four different categories: International Studies and Language, Political Science/Humanities, Religion, and Social Science (which includes sociology, psychology and economics).

Krawtz wrote in an email that the Board of Editors conduct blind peer reviews on each submission, so the authors remain unknown (which hopefully limits bias). Ultimately, each division selects between two and five papers to publish.

This is an important opportunity for students, according to Krawtz.

“It introduces students to the process of getting something of theirs published, which will aid them in future publication efforts,” Krawtz wrote. “Getting your research published is really important for many careers, so becoming acquainted to the process of submitting and getting your work reviewed and edited is a good way to get your feet wet in this regard.”

Getting published in a research journal also looks good on a resume for grad schools or jobs, Krawtz wrote. “It is a way to show employers or schools something you have done that is of high quality that has been recognized as such.”

There is also a small monetary award of about $100 for being published, but Krawtz emphasized that the main draw is getting published as an undergraduate student.

Krawtz wrote that he got involved last year when he became associate editor because he wanted to pursue graduate studies in religion, and he saw this as a good opportunity to be introduced to the research publication process.

Krawtz wrote that his main job this year is to ensure that the blind peer-review process works efficiently, as this “is really important for the integrity of the publication.”

Since Global Tides is an annual publication that is released every spring, there is always an opportunity for next year’s students to submit their papers. The release date has yet to be determined.

Students can visit the Global Tides website for more information, as well as to read previously published articles at http://digitalcommons.pepperdine.edu/globaltides/.
