Get a Job: Going the distance with Disney internships

March 13, 2003 by Pepperdine Graphic

By the Career Center

If you haven’t seen AJ Alvarez this semester, that’s because he is spending spring term as an intern at Disney Florida. His internship includes a full-time weekly work assignment in one of the Parks and attendance in two College Disney courses.

Alvarez said he thinks the first two years of his Pepperdine education has prepared him well to meet the challenges of his internship. His International Program participation last spring in Buenos Aires has added to his cultural understanding of the world of diversity found at Disney.

While many students find great internships for the summertime, other opportunities are available year-round. And internships don’t have to be local either. Pepperdine students like Alvarez have found internships nationally, and even internationally.

To find out more about internship opportunities contact the Internship Office at internship@pepperdine.edu.

Another distance internship program Pepperdine students can prepare for now is the Spring 2004 Washington, D.C. Program. That’s right Spring 2004.

Early decision deadline is April 1, 2003 (for all of you that like to start planning ahead). All majors are encouraged to apply. Students can take REL 301, POSC 518, POSC 521 with Pepperdine faculty or more than 100 class options at Catholic University. Have questions? Contact Nicole Phillips, Washington, D.C. Internship Program Manager at nicole.phillips@pepperdine.edu.

Need help securing an internship for this summer? To get you started, consider attending an Internship Workshop any day from noon to 1 p.m. in the Career Center (Tyler Campus Center 227, ext. 4184). Samples of cover letters, resumes and interview tips are provided. Search assistance is available for the greater Los Angeles/Malibu area and anywhere you want to be this summer. Remember academic internships for credit are available Summer Block III.

You may even want to consider an international internship in London or Buenos Aires. Both International Program sites now include internship options. If you want to gain valuable international business experience or improve your Spanish, space is still available. Contact International Programs for more information (ext. 4532).

Latest statistics of graduating seniors indicate that 77 percent completed at least one internship. In this difficult economy employers are very selective and the market is most competitive. An internship provides you with experiential learning that employers look for in addition to your Pepperdine education.
