Family Art Day painted waves with Malibu locals as the Center for the Arts teamed up with The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum to create an interactive art day for families.
Families gathered on Saturday in Smothers Theatre to see a performance of “The Cat in the Hat” presented by Childsplay and then make correspondingly themed crafts outside of the theater.
“Smothers Theatre brings in professional touring groups that do family performances, and then several times per year we team up and do a family art day,” said Monica Chapon, the arts and education coordinator for the Center for the Arts. “Today, for example, since the theater show is ‘The Cat in the Hat’ … we had Cat in the Hat art, and we were making Cats in the Hat with pasta hats and bowties to paint.”
Nicolas Konnor was a member of one of the many families attending the event.
“I took the little one here today, and she’s enjoying it so far,” Konnor said. “I got to come out with my daughter and my wife,” he said as his family painted macaroni crafts.
In addition to the arts and crafts activities that were provided, families were also enjoying the Weisman Museum’s Warhol exhibit.
“It’s interesting how he put two of him in the same one and got the same distances,” Chase Crosby said while describing a painting depicting of Superman. Crosby said he came to see the museum with his family after learning about Warhol in his sixth grade class.
The theater employees also lead a tour of 30 children and their families backstage to see how scenery is built and understand the workings of a stage.
“We bring in performances and exhibitions from all around the world, and are always looking for ways to connect with the local community. One of the easiest ways of doing that is to connect with their kids and grandkids,” said Rebecca Carson, managing director of the Center for the Arts. “By having hands-on arts and crafts activities for the kids to participate in, it makes for a more rich experience.”
“We see our mission as helping connect Pepperdine to the Malibu Community,” said Carson.
There will also be another Family Art Day on April 17 for the community to enjoy, which features the acrobatic acts of Kamikaze Fireflies. More information can be found at Smothers Theater or at arts.pepperdine.edu.
