Face in the Crowd: Pete Awad

February 7, 2002 by Pepperdine Graphic

Some students like “super senior” Pete Awad just can’t seem to get away from Pepperdine — he plans to graduate in April after five years.

Awad simply moved from one beach to another when he came to Malibu from his hometown, Manhattan Beach. Awad grew up with two sisters — Myra, who is a teacher, and Maryan, who is in medical school.

Awad said that his sisters would always beat him up. Since his Dad was strict about not hitting girls, he had to think of creative ways to get back at them. He would steal their Barbies, rip  their heads off and put them back on with nails.

But now that they are all grown up, Awad has the upper hand because his tallest sister is 5-feet-4-inches tall.

According to Awad, whenever a girl asks how tall he is, he’s 6 feet. But if it’s a guy asking, he is 5-feet-11 inches.

Awad chose Pepperdine because he visited for a leadership camp the summer before his senior year of high school.

The most important thing for Awad about Pepperdine is that it doesn’t have a football team. Awad played fullback and middle linebacker in high school until he tore a ligament in his foot and had to have surgery.

Currently, Awad lives in Woodland Hills, across the street from Krispy Kreme Donuts, and works for Resnet here at Pepperdine. Awad said that he has fixed everyone’s computer on campus, or at least everyone’s suitemate’s computer.

Did you watch the Super Bowl?

No, I can’t believe it. I was doing my policy project.

Did you ever want to play professional football?

I love the sport, but it’s for stupid people. I learned this — if you take a good hit, then you can’t walk and you have nothing to fall back on.

What item of clothing do you wear the most?

A pair of 3-year-old Reefs. They are so worn that I can feel every piece of gravel and asphalt when I walk. I have a new pair in my closet ready to use, but I refuse to get rid of my old ones.

What kind of toothpaste do you use?

Whatever kind my housemates have around. Every once in a while I use their toothbrushes too, but only to clean my toe nails. Just kidding.

What is your favorite cereal?

Cookie Crisp. It’s impossible to find. Actually it’s not, I am just too lazy to look for it. I’ll get it if it is right in front of me, which is never. I think it’s just the whole idea of eating cookies for breakfast.

If you were a color what color would you be?

Bright neon green. You can’t miss it.  It never has to say ‘look at me,’ you can’t help but notice it. Plus it’s the color of exit signs and bar signs.

What is your favorite candy?

Snickers. I know that’s boring, but I like the nuts and carmel, and  you can get Snickers anywhere.

If you were a cartoon character who would it be?

Donald Duck because I could get mad and start screaming and no one would know what I was saying.

What is you favorite movie?

“Scent of a Woman.” Al Pacino is a stud. I want to be Al Pacino.

If you could reach the end of a rainbow, what would you want to find there?

A check for my student loans, or a Ferrari 360 Modena.

Altoids or Tic Tacs?

Altoids. Tic Tacs are too small, you can miss them. But you know an Altoid when it’s there.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Wood Ranch. It’s a steakhouse. There’s one in Agoura.

“Friends” or “Survivor?”

Neither. “Survivor” sucks, and actually so does “Friends.” “Temptation Island,” now that’s a show. Not really, but it is a good twist on an unoriginal idea.

Clock or watch?

Watch, it’s easier. When a professor goes over time, you can just keep looking at your watch until they notice.

Would you rather have a pet pig or a pet rat?

A pet rat. It’s smaller, easier and I wouldn’t feel bad if it died.

Would you feel bad if the pig died?

No, I would wait ‘till it was big enough and take it to the butcher. I love bacon. I am a carnivore.

What is your favorite place in Malibu?

Serra Retreat because they have a horseshoe pit. I just started playing last year.

Are you more like Ricky Martin or Ricky Ricardo?

I have to say Ricky Ricardo. I guess it goes back to the Donald Duck thing, cause Ricky Ricardo screams and no one can understand him either.

See how I brought that full circle? You think I am random, but I’m not.

Who is your favorite professor?

It’s a toss up between Dr. Seshan and Professor Mullen. I hope they are reading this.

Do you have a girlfriend?

There’s a lot of fish in the sea and I am still fishing. But not really.
