When senior Meghan Heydel came to Pepperdine four years ago, she did not expect to find a best friend, roommate, sister-in-law and co-aunt all in one person. But that is exactly what she found in her freshman roommate Bethany Rogers, known to her as Boo, when Heydel’s brother married Rogers’ sister. Now, after rooming with her for three years and living in Lyon, France with her for a year, Heydel became an aunt alongside Rogers when their married siblings gave birth to their niece, Brooklyn Abigail.

“She is a huge baby,” Heydel said. “Nine pounds and five ounces, but she is so beautiful.”

Heydel, an international management major, is from Portland, Ore., and said she plans to return there after graduation.

What are your hobbies?

I like to read a lot, mostly historical fiction. Basically, I like to read history, but not textbooks. I like to play games with my friends and family, and I like to occasionally play my guitar.

What is your ideal vacation?

I have two extremes. Being in a cabin with a fireplace where there is snow outside to go outside and play in, but then coming back inside and drinking hot chocolate. The other one would be going to Maui and lying on the beach.

What do you want to accomplish this month?

Establish good relationships with all my professors. Also get a good grasp on my classes before midterms. My last goal would probably be to break out my tank tops by the end of the month.

What is your favorite thing to do with Pepperdine?

Volunteer. The Volunteer Center as so many programs to participate in, and if I could, I would participate in all of them. The people that work there have so much passion for what they do and the people that they serve can really feel that. My favorite one that I have participated in thus far, though they are all great, is Habitat for Humanity.

What is your most important lesson learned in college?

How to prioritize. There’s nothing more important than time management in college. I thought I was busy in high school, but I had no idea.

One thing you could not live without?

I have two things that I want to say, one of them is cheesy, but I am just going to say it anyway. On a serious note, my Bible because I wouldn’t know where to go without it. The other is Boo because she kind of follows suit with my Bible; she leads me and is my pillar of strength.

What was the last movie you saw?

“King Arthur.” It was actually really good and entertaining, but it was really different from all the other King Arthur movies I have seen.

What is one place in the world you want to travel to?

Fiji. I’ve heard it is gorgeous and it is what Maui used to be. I have been going to Maui ever since I was about 4 years old, but now it has gotten so commercialized.

What are you going to do after graduation?

I’m going to go home to Oregon, but I don’t know what I’m going to do yet. I think I would be miserable here in L.A. There are a lot of options. What I really want to do is work with families that are coming to the U.S. for the first time. So many people write them off.
