Service fills spring break of several seniors
Spring Break has long been the time when college students head to Cancun, Mexico, and other sandy locations to have fun in the sun. And while many students did go to places of leisure, students like seniors Neal Murata and Erin Egley took the Spring Break challenge of going to a lesser known destination of Esperanza in the Dominican Republic.
Murata and Egley went to an orphanage to teach young Dominican children how to read and write.
“It was a great opportunity to help the children because some of them were reading for the first time in their lives,” Murata said.
Although Murata and Egley weren’t the only ones to travel to Esperanza for break, they were the only two running through the streets of Esperanza at midnight, in between tutoring, to train for the Los Angeles Marathon.
The two seniors left the orphanage on Feb. 28, and arrived in Los Angeles at noon on March 1 to be among the 22 other Waves running 26.2 long miles early the next morning.
Hammond spends spring break raising funds for local school
Seaver senior Dorothy Hammond decided to stay around sunny Malibu for Spring Break. Hammond was one of six other students who were invited to work at the annual Point Dume Elementary School Auction where hundreds gathered to raise money for the local school.
It takes a lot to shut down Wolfgang Puck’s Granita for several hours, but it was done that Sunday evening for the live and silent auction. Malibu residents and parents were bidding on things ranging from hand-painted kindergarten tea sets to week-long private island getaways.
Serving as the official live auction spotter, Hammond pointed out the high bids of celebrities like saxophonist Kenny G and General Hospital actress Jackie Zeman. Hammond was amazed at the generosity of everyone there at the event.
“Whenever I can give my time by supporting a worthy cause, schmooze with stars, have fun with my friends and possible enjoy some good food, Dorothy will be there,” Hammond said about herself.
