Saturday night was anything but boring for two groups of Pepperdine students who decided to venture outside of Malibu. Comedian Dane Cook drew a large audience at Hollywood’s Laugh Factory for a sold-out show, including about 40 students, many of whom studied abroad last year in the Florence program. “He’s becoming huge,” said junior Joshua Canas, a huge fan, “pretty much the biggest marketer of comedy. It’s called pseudo comedy. He doesn’t just tell joke after joke. He’s a great storyteller. He sold out at Carnegie Hall last week. I’m kind of obsessed, as you can tell. I was surprised how many people showed up. I sent an email two days ago. I promised everyone in Florence to let them know when he’d be in town. It was good times.”

Over in Orange County, a group of 30 or so gathered with other Southern California students at Anaheim Convention Center for Fresh 2004. Bands Sonic Flood and David Crowder Band were featured, while speaker Miles McPherson, pastor of The Rock church in San Diego and former NFL player, gave a message. “The night was electric,” said junior Jenifer Bolden. “It wasn’t about the artist. It was about God. It wasn’t about singing the songs, it’s about worship.” “There were thousands around you,” said sophomore Mariam Baim. “You knew they were there, but there was no concern. Our hearts were united.”

For freshman Jenny Han, her Saturday on campus brought about an unexpected sighting. “On my way back from the swimming pool, I passed by the basketball court by the track,” Han said. “I saw someone who looked like Adam Sandler, but I wasn’t sure. I stared at him for 10 more minutes and when I realized it was really him, I freaked out.”
