Aria Decline played a going-away show of sorts at Malibu Inn on Friday night. “It’s always good to listen to them because they know how to work the crowd,” senior James Gutierrez said. Aria Decline are currently out of town on tour. Sound Mind, among other up-and-coming bands, opened the night. “It was Sound Mind’s second show,” said senior Brian Bushway, bassist. “When we were there, there were over 50 people, which isn’t bad at all.” Songs that Sound Mind played included “Over and Over” and “Real World.” Their next gig is set for mid-October.
Although it’s easy to take life on campus in Malibu for granted sometimes, the adventures of a few students who are currently in the Hong Kong international program serve as reminders to appreciate what we have here, even simple luxuries like the English language and caf food. “Here, English is the minority language,” junior Eric Hui said. “Street vendors sometimes double the price if you speak English. I haven’t been cheated because I speak Cantonese.” Students have to watch out when it comes to food as well. “You have to check twice before you eat something, even if it’s bread,” junior Ekta Sem said. “Chances are, it’s stuffed with something unpleasant. Dinner is always an experiment. Last week, a friend and I ordered dumpling soup for dinner, and the next day another student told us she went to the same restaurant for lunch and wanted dumpling soup, but the woman told her it was only served with shark meat. It was traumatizing. I’m not too fond of eating interesting meats.”
