Queen of Hearts, Sigma Epsilon’s week-long event put on for its philanthropy, YouthAIDS, ended with a beauty pageant on Friday. Delta Delta Delta won overall. Events that SGA and each sorority participated in during the week to raise funds for YouthAIDS included a trivia contest, cook-off, and volleyball tournament. “We had a really good turn-out,” said Tom Ahn, sophomore advertising major and multi-media minor. “So far, we’ve raised roughly over $1,000.” International speaker, Shelley Singer, shared her personal struggle with AIDS on the night of the pageant. “It was a reality check for all the people there about how so many people around the world are not educated about AIDS,” said Ahn.

Latin Student Association (LSA) hosted “Sabor de Salsa,” a salsa dancing night, in a decorated Hahn Fireside Room on Saturday at 8 p.m. The 50 or so participants were treated to a DJ, free appetizers and beverages, and danced a few hours away to salsa, hip-hop, and other eclectic music. Though several dressed up, most donned casual attire, even sweats. “It was fun,” said senior James Gutierrez, sports medicine major and member of LSA. “It ended with 15 strong, including me.”

Over in Oxnard, 50-60 students crowded onto an indoor ice rink to continue a biannual Campus Ministry tradition of broomballing. “It’s a great way to get people who aren’t necessarily involved with Campus Ministry to come hang out,” said Ellie Graham, senior religion major who planned the event with Dan Kryder. Though the night began later than planned due to road construction, the time spent on the ice was marked with good-natured rivalry between classes and ended harm-free.
