Campus Rec Goes Kayaking

A group of students joined Campus Rec for a kayaking trip to Point Dume on Saturday. The excursion drew in a wide array of participants, ranging from beginner to expert kayakers, freshmen to seniors and International Studies to Economics majors.

The group spent the early hours of the afternoon paddling their way to Point Dume from Escondido Beach. There were plenty of things to see along the way, including a sea otter lazily floating above a kelp forest, junior Justin Lew wrote in an email.

One of the trip leaders, junior Kiana Newman, wrote in an email they even spotted a couple of dolphins. The outing is just one of the many events Campus Rec plans for the Pepperdine community throughout the school year.

Junior Amy Sohlberg, another trip leader, shared the details of the main goal of this excursion, as well as all of Campus Rec’s outings.

“We wanted to give students the opportunity to get out on the water with kayaks and see the beauty of the ocean,” Sohlberg wrote in an email. “I think a main goal of all of our trips is also to give people the chance to get away from the stress and craziness of being inside the Pepperdine bubble and to get to be somewhere beautiful and so much bigger than themselves.”

It seems as though the participants got exactly what Campus Rec wanted them to out of the trip. Lew wrote that the trip gave him a chance to get some fresh air, pass some time with friends, and get in a good workout along the way. In addition to the trip being a solid physical workout, freshman Taya Stewart wrote in an email that the excursion was also a good test of mental strength.

“I realized the power of the mind,” Stewart wrote. “When I told myself I was going to finish, I finished. There is enjoyment in trying something new and testing your limits.”

Stewart also wrote about wanting to do more events with Campus Rec in the future, as she sees their activities as a good way to make new friends and have fun.

Pepperdine life can get really crazy pretty fast, so what better way to mellow out than with a fun weekend excursion? Make sure you visit Campus Rec’s webpage for more information on what activities they offer throughout the school year.
