Smothers Theatre holds events from musicals to pianist solo performances. However, the theatre will be transformed into a funky concert venue for the Battle of the Bands, which is put on by the Student Programming Board.
“We don’t have any formal small concert series for students to play in, so by doing a Battle of the Bands, we give student bands an opportunity to perform in front of their peers,” said senior David Brooks.
This year, there are four bands competing for the title and $500 cash prize: The Bio Dome 5, Allure, Cavil At Rest and Say No More.
The Bio Dome 5 is comprised of six students, the largest of the four participating bands. They describe their music as “eclectic-indie-fuzz-rock” and a style that “people have been trying to make for centuries but have failed,” said sophomore Darrell Brisco.
Although they said they hope to “bridge generational gaps” someday with their music, they remain a local band for now. Their next show after Battle of the Bands is at Coffeehouse.
By contrast, the smallest group is Allure with three band members. They decided on their band name less than a week before the show.
“We don’t sound like anyone in particular,” said junior Joe Mullins. “Our guitar player is really creative.”
Both Cavil At Rest and Say No More have just one Pepperdine student in their band, but they are looking forward to the opportunity to play in the competition.
“We are excited to rock the freaking socks off of Pepperdine,” said junior Joey Brumme of Say No More. “We want to play to as many audiences as possible.” Brumme described the band’s music genre as bluesy-rock. “We try to be original,” he said.
Sophomore Ryan Hahn of Cavil At Rest said the band members aspire to grow into professional musicians someday through experiences like the Battle of the Bands. Hahn cites the band’s musical influences as The Beatles, Crosby Stills Nash Young and the Beach Boys.
The performances will be judged by a five-member panel.
