Face in the Crowd: Lance Westfall

November 11, 2004 by Pepperdine Graphic

Tracy  Domingo
Assistant Living Editor

Perhaps you have seen Pepperdine senior Lance Westfall serving food in the cafeteria on Tuesdays nights for his fraternity. Or maybe you have seen him at University Ministries. Or maybe you have even had the honor of hearing his impeccable Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonation. The fact is, no matter where you encounter Westfall it’s immediately clear that this San Diego native is definitely one of a kind.

Double-majoring in religion and political science, Westfall keeps his schedule filled with class, fraternity events and a healthy appetite for sports. In addition, Westfall was one of the co-founders of the ASU, the Arnold Student Union. While the club is currently on hiatus this semester because the application to be a club was turned in late, Westfall assures students “it will be back.”

While his future plans after graduation are not yet carved in stone, Westfall said he will wind up back in San Diego because it is “the greatest city on the face of the planet.”

“What Texas is to Texans, San Diego is to me,” Westfall said.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I either want to own my own business, be on the SWAT team, or direct some kind of youth outreach or ministry program. I think I’ve finally given up on my dream to be in the NBA. I’m just not tall enough.
Who is your favorite celebrity or politician?
I don’t even think I have to answer this question. Arnold Schwarzenegger. I like him because his movies just rock and plus the fact that he is just huge. My favorite movie of his is “Commando” … the death count has got to be 4,000 or more. It’s hilarious.

What is your favorite thing to do?

A combination of two water sports: surfing and body boarding or pretty much anything in the water. This semester I have not been able to surf as much because I’ve been sick, but when I’m not sick I surf about once or twice a week.

What is your most memorable moment at Pepperdine?

The faculty spa trips were nice, but probably the best was freshman year at a men’s basketball game against USC. We won on a buzzer shot and me and some friends stormed the court. Our team was good then, we owned L.A.

What is your favorite movie?

Gladiator. I’d rather not say why.

What are some of your pet peeves?

Things don’t really annoy me very often, but I guess traffic gets me a little upset sometimes. When people cut in front of me without blinker usage, I usually just give them a sarcastic thumbs up. Also, I’m against cell phones. They have bailed me out a few times, but I just think it’s just really stereotypical to have your cell phone, computer and your Starbucks coffee.

Where else did you apply for college?

Nowhere. It was Pepperdine or bust. I just really liked it here because of the beach, it wasn’t at home, but not too far away from home, and I just really liked the personal and Christian aspect of the school.

What is your favorite band?

Can I have two? They would have to be Led Zeppelin and Guns and Roses. They are two of the greatest bands ever. I listen to all kinds of music, but classic rock is probably my favorite because of the true musical talent.

Do you play a musical instrument?

Yes I play a little guitar. I was in about the sixth grade when I found a guitar in my attic and started messing around with it. Some friends came over and they taught me a few things. I actually ended up taking lessons for about six months, but then I quit. Now I like to play on and off.
