Horner crowned Miss Los Angeles County
Junior Elise Horner represented Pepperdine last weekend when she was named Miss Los Angeles County in the local pageant that continues on to Miss California and eventually Miss America.
Horner, who has been participating in local, state and national pageants since she was young, first wanted to become involved after seeing Miss America on the cover of Ebony magazine when she was 9 years old.
“I saw what Miss America was doing to help people and I told my mom that I wanted to do that,” Horner said.
During the county pageants she was judged after the interview, talent, swimwear and evening wear events.
Horner performed a lyrical dance, “Believe,” as her talent and spoke about relieving homelessness as her platform for current issues.
“Homelessness is a prevalent problem that does not get enough attention from legislatures,” Horner said. “It is important for people to help others.”
The Miss America program is the largest scholarship provider for furthering women’s education and gives hundreds of scholarships annually.
Horner said she is looking forward to competing in June for Miss California.
“I think I have a pretty good shot,” Horner said.
Graphic editor gets engaged
It is no longer “ring by spring,” it’s “ring by winter.” Seniors Delite Young and Michael Travis became engaged Jan. 18.
Travis planned a weekend in Napa Valley to celebrate their third year of dating and to ask Young to be his wife.
“He totally caught me off guard,” Young said. “I had no idea that he was going to propose that weekend.”
The couple visited seven different vineyards throughout the weekend.
It was not until the last vineyard that Travis asked the question.
“He wanted to wait until dusk when the full moon was rising in the background,” Young said. “It was a very romantic surprise that I had been waiting for.”
A date has not yet been set for the wedding since Young and Travis are planning on moving to Washington, D.C. after they graduate in April.
