A friendly and outgoing face was added to the Pepperdine community last fall when junior Yuki Choy transferred from Santa Monica City. Choy said he loves Pepperdine because of its location, beauty, size and Christian influence.
He hopes his international business education gives him the opportunity to “do some kind of business but be able to travel to many different countries and interact with other people.” Twenty-three years into his life, Choy has already inhabited three: he was born in Korea and lived both there and Japan before coming here permanently for college.
After graduation, he said he definitely plans on going to graduate school, but isn’t sure exactly when he will get around to it. Plans for the upcoming summer is as far into the future as Choy cares to think at the moment and he is thinking hard. He hopes to attend the European Business Program and travel to London next month.
For now, Choy is enjoying life at Pepperdine as a member of the Pepperdine International Club and intramural soccer. He plays on the “Not Your Team” team and says it is ironic because “it was supposed to be a joke and now we’re in the final game on Thursday.”
What is the first thing you think about when you wake up in the morning?
Hmm, more sleep.
Assuming that you don’t give in to temptation and you do get up in the morning, what do you usually eat for breakfast?
I would rather sleep than eat, but when I can I like eggs, ham, bacon and chocolate milk. Breakfast is a treat so you definitely go all out.
What is your favorite food?
Kalbee. It’s a marinated barbecue beef rib. Of course, you have to include kimchee. It’s like a Korean pickle, but it’s really hot.
Just in case anyone out there is already wondering if you can woo them away with a nice, romantic dinner and all these foods, can you cook?
Uh, yes, I believe so. I can cook pasta.
Anyone can cook pasta.
I know, but I can make the sauce from scratch and I once cooked roast beef.
So how do you feel about Abercrombie?
I think they are overpriced.
I noticed you are wearing an Abercrombie jacket.
Yeah, I like them, but they’re still overpriced.
What other kind of clothes do you wear?
That’s a good question. It depends on the occasion. I like to dress up when I can because you don’t get to do that often.
If you could be any article of clothing, what would you be and why?
I would be a pair of shoes so I get to walk around with others. I mean, I get to walk around and go to all kinds of places. But then, that’s the same with anything you wear. But, still, the shoes are good.
What do you think about bowling?
I’m not a fan. I don’t like the fact that I have to wear those shoes, it’s so unsanitary.
Describe a typical Friday night for you.
I usually just chill in my suite.
Are you good friends with your suitemates?
Very much so. Most of them are there on Friday nights and Malibu is so far from anything else and I’m lazy. When I do go out, though, I usually don’t come back ‘til Monday.
If you could do anything in the world at this very moment, what would you do and why?
I would go straight to my room and sleep, because I have to stay up all night and do my take home midterm.
Okay, well if it weren’t for that, would sleep really be the most exciting thing?
Uh huh.
If you could invent anything you wanted, what would you invent and why?
A machine that would stop time ‘cause I tend to procrastinate, but even so, I don’t think I’d do much homework even if I did do that.
Where is your favorite place in the entire world?
For now, I like the beaches in Hawaii.
Any beach in particular?
Sandy Beach in Oahu is good because the water is beautiful and there aren’t that many surfers there.
Have you been to Hawaii before?
Just once when I was little.
Beside sandy beaches, what else do you really like?
I like motorcycles, but I just sold my own.
Do you have a car?
Yeah, I have a very old car.
How old is old?
It’s a 1967 Ford Mustang.
Well, at least if you have an old car, it’s a classic one. So what do you eat for dinner?
There isn’t anything typical. It depends on the day, but anything with kimchee is good.
What is the last thing you think about before going to sleep?
Thank you Jesus! I just like to thank him for another day and another good rest and strength for the next day.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I’m a very friendly person to talk to so if you see me on campus feel free to say hi and talk to me, or buy me lunch, and I’ll buy you lunch!
