Calling all poets and writers! Do you want to see your work published in a magazine? Currents Magazine is seeking submissions for poems and short stories to be featured in this semester’s edition.
The Theme:
Flipping the tropes of light and darkness. We want to challenge people’s intrinsic associations of light = good and dark = bad, which means we are writing stories on ideas such as nocturnal Malibu wildlife, mythology about the stars, how other cultures view light and color, the impact of blue light, and more. We want to see how creative and out of the box you can take this theme, so be creative!
Details:
The first-place winner from each section will be published in the print magazine, with second and third place winners published in the online edition.
Poetry: Poems can be up to a page, in whatever style or form you prefer.
Short story: Short stories should be around 2,000 words.
Competition deadline is Oct. 13, at midnight, winners will be notified by Nov. 7.
Potential prompts/inspiration ideas:
- A crazed astronomer sets out to sabotage a city’s power grid in an effort to make people, for once, see the stars.
- When you were 18, your boyfriend paid $50 online to ‘buy’ you a star. Years go by, and suddenly life has been discovered on that star, which you still technically own.
- Who would the sun and moon be if they were people?
- Compare 2 p.m. and 2 a.m.
- What are some things you think about at night that you don’t in the day?
