The Woolsey Fire has burned hundreds of structures and remains zero percent contained. Malibu is under a mandatory evacuation order and Pepperdine is sheltering in place.

Here is a timeline of how the timeline has unfolded:

  • The Woolsey fire broke out Thursday afternoon south of Simi Valley
  • After 5 a.m. the fire jumped the south side of the 101 Freeway near Calabasas
  • At 7 a.m. Pepperdine University sent emergency alert and informed students and staff that they are monitoring the Woolsey fire and might need to relocate them to shelter-in-place locations (Tyler Campus Center and the Firestone Fieldhouse)
  • Malibu officials warned residents at 12:30 p.m. to leave immediately as flames grew out of control toward neighborhoods.
  • Students began moving in to shelter-in-locations between 7 a.m. to 8 a.m
  • We talked to students and they described how they were feeling:
  • At around 10 a.m. acting Governor Gavin Newsom declares state of emergency as Woolsey fire continues to spread
  • Andrew K. Benton addressed the student body at Firestone Fieldhouse (11:38 a.m) and assured them they were safe
  • Students were allowed to go back to their dorms at 12:44 p.m
  • A mandatory evacuation for the City of Malibu and areas south of the 101 Fwy was initiated at 1 p.m
  • Pepperdine re-initiated the shelter-in-place protocol at 2:10 p.m.
  • LA County Sheriff’s Dept. press conference (5 p.m) said no lives lost so far despite fire having grown to 35,000 acres
  • At 8 p.m. Payson Library opened as a shelter-in-place through the night and Firestone Fieldhouse was closed.
  • Many students have left campus, and those that remain say it’s been a really hard 48 hours:
