Weekly Culture Collection

October 23, 2017 by Ella Gonzalez

Weekly Culture Collection is a column that gives the best things to eat, see and do near Pepperdine, Malibu and the surrounding Los Angeles area. It’s like The New Yorker’s Goings on About Town section but not as high-brow, and there is no dandy with an eyeglass. It also has nothing to do with New York.

Unconventional times call for unconventional means to escape their clutches. Unconventional times also call for unconventional weekly culture collections —and repetition of “unconventional” ad infinitum. Bothered? Don’t be. Here’s the best things to do, hear and pet this week.

MALIBU LAGOON FIELD TRIPS: FAMILY BIRDWATCHING WALK

Oct. 22 at 8:30 a.m. for adult walks and 10 a.m. for family walks. Intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Cross Creek Road.

Ornithology is the scientific study of birds, and Malibu, with its rural coastal atmosphere is a natural place to house the subject of this curious science. The fourth Sunday of every month, ornithologists or amateur binocular users convene at Malibu Lagoon for bird watching led by the Santa Monica Bay Audubon Society. While the family bird watching walk starts at 10 a.m., and lasts an hour, the adult walk begins at 8:30 a.m. The adult walk lasts two to three hours and does not include screaming children, but perhaps Pepperdine students who have exhausted every weekend activity and resorted to bird watching. Sad? Maybe. But should you take a shot at looking at a bird that is not a pigeon or seagull? Yeah, why not?

TOTALLY AWESOME SILENT DISCO PARTY

Oct. 21-22, 9 p.m.-1 a.m. — 1819 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90405

It might not be permissible to dress like it is 1999, but it is certainly advisable to party like it is. The Totally Awesome Silent Disco Party pays homage to the music of the 1990s and may, for some Pepperdine students, harken back to the fetal days. Nonetheless old musical acts and new ones—like DJs Miss NINJA and KoKo will fuse inexperienced times in utero with new times via unorthodox dance parties and wireless headphones that allow users to tune in to the DJ of their choice in the glory that is the Silent Disco Party.

Strut Your Mutt Los Angeles

Oct. 21 — 701 State Dr. Los Angeles, CA 90037

Strut Your Mutt Day has a catchy name, but its clever nomenclature is secondary to the noble cause supported: homeless pets. Sometimes good starts with kind acts to the furry friends graciously deemed “Man’s Best Friend.” Strut your mutt is part dog walk, part fundraising event and the homeless pets supported will thank you — and, perhaps, wag their tails.

Bird watching, strutting your mutt and listening to music will likely not bolster one’s cool factor. These events will, however, be tokens for one’s cultural repertoire and fodder for many an amusing anecdote.
