Weekly Culture Collection is a column that gives the best things to eat, see and do near Pepperdine, Malibu and the surrounding Los Angeles area. It’s like The New Yorker’s Goings on About Town section but not as high-brow, and there is no dandy with an eyeglass. It also has nothing to do with New York.
An evenly spread motley of the best things to see, eat and do to for the week are featured in this week’s Culture Collection.

Face of Malibu Portrait Painting Exhibit — Opening Reception
Oct. 6, 5:30-7:30 p.m. — Malibu City Hall Atrium, 23825 Stuart Ranch Rd., Malibu, CA 90365
It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. If this is true, then how much is a portrait worth? In the Face of Malibu exhibit, the word count may be innumerable, or, at least, confined to the word count of a Malibu Times article. The Face of Malibu exhibit will feature paintings by Malibu artist Johanna Spinks of more than 60 Malibu residents. Spinks spends two hours on each portrait and doesn’t charge a penny. While Spinks paints the portrait, a reporter from the Malibu Times interviews the subject in a project that has been going on since 2012. The opening reception will inaugurate the fifth year of this project by featuring portraits from Spinks’ growing oeuvre.

Oct. 8, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. — Various locations
It might be said that part of being a millennial is liking brunch; savoring, preparing, and paying for overpriced fare like avocado toast for the sole purpose of having an enviable Instagram feed. There are the infamous millenials, subject of both ridicule and 21st century lore, who stand up on tables to get the perfect shot — phones levitating precariously close to meeting their tragic end by falling into a steaming latte. Brunch Crawl is part of the progeny of the people who brought Los Angeles the Santa Monica Pub Crawl. In an effort to keep things Pepperdine appropriate, the brunch crawl is recommended for dry campus safety standards and an optimum Instagram feed replete with millennial-approved sustenance.

Oct. 7, 3-9 p.m. — 2854 Triunfo Canyon Road, Agoura Hills, CA 91301
While the word “palooza” typically conjures up a music festival, this time it is the more charming member of the squash family that is celebrated. Agoura Hills PumpkinPalooza is the self-proclaimed first of its kind STEM-focused fall festival. How, exactly, does STEM relate to a pumpkin, other than the stem the plump circular gourd is plucked from? Through a pumpkin derby, a rocket launch party, and a non-STEM related (unless one counts the stems one dances on) Silent DJ party.
Portraits, pumpkins and brunch make for a dynamic trio as much as they do a millennial Dr. Seussian catalogue.
