Pepperdine is an oasis in the anti-college town of Malibu where, across the bay, one can catch a view of Santa Monica, the edges of LA and beyond — a world where entertainment and art are the heartbeat of the streets.
Entertainment is how we spend our free moments. Art is where we find ourselves. Entertainment frees our minds from the daily grind, relaxing and relieving the human spirit. Art shows us the things that pull on our heartstrings and ring true with our past and our current ideas.
My whole life, I’ve been obsessed with stories and how they’re told. I spent much of my time as a child fabricating stories instead of doing homework, and I often tried to get away with writing short stories instead of essays. From video games to poetry, my life is enraptured by the idea that the human experience can be recorded, transposed and transcended through art.
This magazine strives to combine those concepts through unique photography, articles and narratives. The truth my staff and I have discovered is that the world of entertainment and art is always in flux.
It is an evolving landscape as intricate as the sprawling highways of Los Angeles, where I’ve lived, learned and been perpetually stuck in traffic (often in search of the perfect cup of coffee — see p. 57-58).
This land is one where aspiring individuals hope for a break and where many find the glamorous life to be a disappointment. Ultimately, it’s a place that represents the whole of American culture, how it shifts and evolves. This magazine is an inside look into the truth behind entertainment and art.
