Successful applicants of President Andrew Benton’s Waves of Innovation will receive one-time planning grants up to $5,000 to prepare a proposal for consideration to be on Jan. 15, 2014. Benton has chosen the following eight initiatives:
1) Joe Fritsch (Seaver College, faculty): Biodegradable Plastics Prepared with Optimized, Environmentally-Friendly Catalyst– A proposal to replace plastics made of poly-ethylene with more environmentally friendly plastics. Plans to grant entrepreneurial opportunities with polymer companies.
2) Mark Chen (Graduate School of Education and Psychology, faculty): Center for Gameful Design– A proposal to a build a gaming center in which designers and researchers will be able to make and study both games and gaming practice.
3) Sue Oh (Seaver College, student): College Connections– A proposal to have Seaver College undergraduates mentor inner city kids and provide advice through their college application process.
4) Teri Tompkins (Graziadio School of Business and Management, faculty): Designing a Curriculum and Delivery System for Next-Generation Executive Students– A proposal to have Pepperdine create an Executive MBA program that will allow students from other parts of the country and the world to attend Pepperdine classes.
5) June Schmeider-Ramirez (Graduate School of Education and Psychology, faculty): The Doctorate in Global Leadership (Ph.D.)– A proposal for a Ph.D. in Global Leadership to be instituted at the Washington D.C. Pepperdine University site.
6) Charles Hall (Seaver College, staff): Global Oceanic– A proposal in which undergraduates from Pepperdine and other christian universities would embark on two 15-week shipboard semesters to grow spiritually.
7) Rhiannon Bailard (Pepperdine University, staff): Live Green– A proposal to convert an existing residence hall into a sustainable living project whose objective would be to educate students on sustainable living as well as test sustainable building solutions.
8) Michael Ditmore (Seaver College, faculty): Pepperdine Executive Preceptorial– A proposal to establish faculty facilitated preceptorials by utilizing 15-20 professionals that want to combine social and intellectual stimulation.
