Following an eighth-place finish in its last tournament the Pepperdine women’s golf team descended on Sonora Mexico’s prestigious Peninsula Golf Club and rebounded with a solid showing on Tuesday at the annual Wildcat Invitational.
The Waves’ fifth-place finish proved even more impressive considering the stiff competition.
Facing some of America’s top collegiate golfers the No.-22 Waves shot a three-round combined score of 889 finishing ahead of the likes of No.-9 Duke No.-16 Denver and No.-17 California.
“It was just an overall better team effort freshman Jessica Wallace said. We each improved on something that we struggled with in the first tournament this spring.”
Four members of the team placed in the top 25 overall including one in the top 15.
Senior Jayvie Agojo had the best tournament performance for the Waves with a 4-over 220 (75-70-75) to put her in 14th place.
“Jayvie was striking the ball well this week and really fought hard Wallace said. She’s a great leader on the team.”
Sophomore Taylore Karle shot a final round one-over 73 moving up to 22nd place to conclude her trip south of the border. Freshmen Kaitlin Drolson and Lisa McCloskey both shot a 225 to finish tied for 25th. Fellow freshman Jessica Wallace added a three-round total of 231 tying for 42nd-place.
The Lady Waves shot a first-round 305 but bounced back with one of their best showings of the season. A second-round score of 285 put the Waves right back into contention for the title. It was also the top overall team score on Monday.
However the squad didn’t have as great of luck during its final round. The Waves broke the 300-shot mark for the second time this spring tallying a 299 but dropped down to 5th place.
Pepperdine will play host to BYU Cal State Northridge Long Beach State New Mexico State UCLA and UNLV at the Wave Invitational next Tuesday and Wednesday. Moorpark Country Club will be the site of the inaugural event.
