The Waves broke numerous records last week in the Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout at the Boulder Creek Golf Club proving that the young team can compete against veteran teams in the NCAA.
The Waves shot a score of 823 to win the tournament and set an NCAA record for the lowest team score at 41-under par. The team captured the title 12 strokes ahead of Oklahoma State.
Freshman Lisa McCloskey won the individual title with a total score of 199 at 17-under par. McCloskey’s 199 was the lowest recorded score in women’s college golf.
McCloskey did not incur any bogeys during the 54-hole tournament. Her scorecard included 15 birdies and an eagle.
“It is going to take a while for it to settle in but I definitely went out there expecting it to be just like any other round said McCloskey about her record-breaking round. I just felt like I played really consistently but it did feel good to make so many consecutive birdies.”
Pepperdine’s previous individual player record was set by Katherine Hull at the 2003 San Jose State Spartan Invitational where she shot a 16-under 200. The previous team records in the NCAA were a 24-under 834 from Duke and UCLA in the 2005 season.
McClosky was not the only golfer who played well. Senior Jayvie Agojo finished in sixth place with a score of 8-under 208. Agojo was very close to recording a bogey-free tournament until one came in her final back nine.
Sophomore Taylore Karle was tied for seventh with a score of 7-under 209. Karle shot a final round 66 to move up 11 spots from the previous day.
Freshman Kaitlin Drolson was tied for ninth with a score of 6-under 210. Drolson shot a final round 71 to shoot three-straight under-par rounds.
This eventful tournament was the last of their three tournaments in the fall season.
They will resume play for the next season at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Feb. 9.
