Women’s soccer gained their first conference win Sunday against Saint Mary’s with a 2-0 victory following a disappointing tie with University of San Francisco on Friday to improve their season record to 8-5-5 and 1-2-2 in the West Coast Conference.
With a substandard tie against the University of San Francisco (4-12) on Friday the Waves were left with a cloud of dissatisfaction. Traditionally the team has responded well after losses or disappointments.
“We had our chances and it’s just the difference of finishing those and celebrating or not finishing them and being frustrated junior defender Myriah Stockman said after Friday’s 0-0 tie with USF.
During the game, the Waves had possession for the majority of the match, but lacked the urgency to score. More than anything they looked stagnant, constantly turning over the ball and missing multiple opportunities to mount an effective attack against the Dons.
Determined to pull out a win, the Waves mounted a solid defensive effort in a fairly evenly matched game on Sunday against WCC’s Saint Mary’s College.
Sophomore forward Anisa Guajardo was able to net a goal in the 27th minute, her sixth of the season, to put the Waves up 1-0 at halftime. A second goal came just after the start of the second half when Guajardo won a penalty kick in the 48th minute.
Freshman defender Kristin DeGrandmont stepped up to take the shot, scoring her first collegiate goal to bring the Waves to a 2-0 lead.
We really needed a win Head Coach Tim Ward said. It’s nice to get our first WCC win but I wish it had come sooner.”
Ward and the Waves are looking to regroup and pull out a strong finish to their season.
With the Waves’ 1-2-2 WCC record they rank fifth out of the eight West Coast Conference schools. With only two games left in the season there isn’t much hope for a bid into the NCAA tournament. Next the Waves travel to face off against San Diego currently ranked sixth in the WCC on Oct. 29 which will be followed by their last home match Nov. 6 against Santa Clara.
