Released amid the cacophony of 9/11 murmurs, the newest release by south London trio The xx features an online interactive map that records where the album is streaming, whether Beijing or Scandinavia. The Republican National Convention that just ended in Tampa amounted to a long week of patriotic-sounding bromides and ambiguous promises to “take the country back.” In spite of this lack of specificity, a potential Romney-Ryan administration is beginning to come together into a coherent picture — and it’s not a pretty one. I’ve come to the conclusion that if Mitt Romney wins the presidential election, we, the students of America, will lose. 5. Students ‘Step Forward’ to serve
More than 1,400 volunteers spent their Saturday morning participating in the 24th annual Step Forward Day. Students, faculty, staff and alumni volunteered at 70 locations throughout Los Angeles County and Ventura County, representing 65 different organizations. Volunteers from Pepperdine’s five campuses completed between 5,750 and 6,000 hours of service Saturday. To read more click here.

4. Sepulveda Pass fire reaches 40 percent containment
More than 70 acres were burned in what is believed to be a brush fire that started around 4:00 pm on Sept. 14, on the east side of the 405 freeway near Getty Center Drive, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The fire brought the 405 freeway to a standstill Friday afternoon and called for a voluntary evacuation of the Getty Center. It was reported that the approximately 75 fire fighters battling the blaze had the fire 40% contained before suspending their efforts for the night. Fire crews resumed at first light Saturday morning and expect to have the blaze out by Sunday. Fire risk is currently very high because of low humidity levels and high temperatures. 2. Christopher Benton admits threatening father, pleads no contest
Christopher Benton pleaded no contest on Sept. 7 to making threats against his father, Andrew K. Benton, and possessing a firearm by a narcotic addict and could face two years in prison when he returns to court on Sept. 21, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. He will be sentenced at the end of the month and it is anticipated that he will face two years in prison, according to an email statement from President Benton. The statement also affirmed that Benton would not be allowed to return to campus. Click here to read more.
