Delta Gamma hosted its annual philanthropy Anchor Splash on Sunday under the slogan “partying with a purpose.” The event consisted of water games and synchronized swimming competitions between sororities and fraternities. Sigma Chi won in the fraternities’ bracket and Gamma Phi Beta won in the sororities bracket.
This year DG was able to raise about $170 Junior Elizabeth Krawczyk reported. This is close to the same amount as last year. However they expect to surpass last year’s amount as more money with more monetary contributions coming in the mail.
The money raised goes to the Delta Gamma Foundation which gives locally to the Blind Children’s Center of Los Angeles.
DGs have been hosting Anchor Splash since 1997. Delta Gamma’s Beta Tau chapter at the University of Miami in Florida hosted the first Anchor Splash.
Although Pepperdine Greek students host a large number of philanthropy events throughout the year Krawczyk believes DG’s philanthropy event stands out because “Anchor Splash has always had a high level of Greek involvement but we really encourage non-Greek groups to participate as well. In the past there have been Anchor Splash teams from the water polo team women’s volleyball team women’s soccer team AKPsi Business Fraternity and UM.”
Besides donating money to the Blind Children’s Center of Los Angeles Delta Gammas also visit the center during Step Forward Day as well as during other events the sorority hosts throughout the year.
“It’s great to be able to write a check and send it to a national foundation but we actually get to go and see a tangible difference in the lives of the children at the BCC Krawczyk said.
