Break out your Frisbees and blankets because Saturday April 2 Sigma Chi hopes to bring forth Pepperdine’s community spirit with a philanthropic concert at Alumni Park.
“Pepperdine is very community-oriented and I think this is a great way to get together said Sigma Chi Executive Board Secretary Bobby Hall. I just picture our community out there having a great time while raising money.”
At the event the feature band will be “Midnight Hour whose alternative-style hits have appeared on popular TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy” and “Laguna Beach.” Additionally the concert’s proceeds will go to the organization City of Hope which provides treatment to those affected by cancer.
According to Hall the organization also specializes in research and development.
“They make a lot of advancements in new technology so besides just the way they treat their patients they also add to curing cancer Hall said.
In previous years, Sigma Chi hosted a 5k walk/run. But Hall explained that the event was unable to encourage the kind of participation that they were hoping for. So this year, they anticipate that the concert will also bring forth support from students not involved in Greek life.
We’re really trying to reach out to the non-Greek community Hall said, because we want to show the Pepperdine community what Greek life is all about and that we’re here to raise money.”
“If we get enough people out to this event we can hopefully get bigger bands each year Hall said.
Along with ticket sales, Sigma Chi has been tabling to promote this concert by having students write down on white boards what they are hopeful for in their futures. Then, they take pictures of those boards and post them on Facebook to raise awareness.
This is the only event that’s not a competition [within the Greek community] Hall said. So it’s going to be interesting to see how organizations perform when it’s not a competition and it’s solely based on helping.”
With high hopes Sigma Chi expects this event will bring back a “fun” aspect to events on campus.
“We don’t have anything like this at Pepperdine anymore Hall said. And so we’re hoping that this will show Pepperdine that we really do want more [events like] this concert.”
President of Sigma Chi Moises Gonzalez wants this event to demonstrate a sense of community involvement.
“This year it’s more than just raising money Gonzalez said. We want to raise the money that’s our main goal but we also really want to involve the community and bring them together as a whole.”
“We just want everyone to come out to the concert and have a good time raise money and have fun under the sun Hall said.
