The Student Government Association is planning its “Health Care and Healthy Living” Week for Nov. 10 to 14. SGA Vice President of Administration John Ceglia said the events – organized by the freshman and junior classes – are meant “to promote healthy living in a college environment.”
There will be a convocation held Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Fireside Room featuring two speakers: Ember Strand coordinator of fitness programs for Campus Recreation and Megan Barnes a Pepperdine graduate and founder of the nonprofit organization Figure. Figure seeks to promote healthy body images. SGA is also hoping to have speakers from both Campus Ministry and the Counseling Center.
Along with the speakers’ presentations SGA plans to show informative video clips and distribute pamphlets with statistics.
“We want as many students to show up as possible because we think it’ll be a very effective convo said Katie Stjernholm, junior class senator.
In addition, SGA will host a coffeehouse during the health week, most likely on Thursday, called Ground Yourself.” SGA said it hopes to feature popular student artists in the coffeehouse and will address the issues of negative body image and eating disorders.
“We live on a campus where negative body image and eating disorders are all too prevalent Stjernholm said. This event will be effective in addressing it.”
SGA passed a resolution Wednesday to fund the health week’s “Jamboree” on Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. The junior and freshman classes are planning to have a variety of activities and hope to erect a bounce house on lower dorm road. SGA members will also be handing out flyers with health-related facts.
“The Jamboree is a great opportunity for people to come together and have something fun and healthy to enjoy said Senior Class Senator Ashley Assemi.
SGA passed a second resolution on Wednesday to grant funds to the Latino Student Association’s (LSA) 7th annual Salsa Night. The LSA Salsa Night will take place on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. in Alumni Park, and all of the money raised from the event will benefit the group’s philanthropy, Heart of Los Angeles.
