MALIBU, Ca.–The women’s basketball team defeated the Santa Clara Broncos 67-57 at Firestone Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. The Waves were led by seniors Jazmine Jackson and Lauren Bell, who scored 16 and 14 points respectively. Despite a steady Wave lead in the first 14 minutes, the turning point came with 6:06 left in the first half as the Broncos took the lead 17-16. The Waves wasted no time getting on the board in the second half, as junior forward Kelsey Patrick sank a jumper to tie the game at 26-26 with 19:41 left in the game.
The two teams went back and forth, but with another jumper from Patrick the Waves secured the lead 30-29 and wouldn’t relinquish it from that point on. Pepperdine outshot the Broncos 52 percent to 46.2 percent from the field in the second half. Strong defense on the perimeter held them to only 1-7 shooting from behind the three-point line. The Waves will stay at home and host San Francisco at 7 p.m. PT on Thursday, Jan. 19.
