The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is hosting a showing of “90210” and “Melrose Place” at the Sandbar patio as a part of a competition sponsored by the CW.
The network challenged PRSSA chapters nationwide to lead a CW campaign on their college campus. The winning chapter will be honored at the PRSSA Awards Ceremony at the 2009 National Conference in San Diego receive $10 and one chapter member will have the opportunity for an internship at the CW.
“The CW gave us a $300 budget to use as many tools as we can said Senior Maia Knudsen-Schule, who is in charge of the event. PRSSA was also limited to $3,000 in donations from restaurants.
The evening will feature outdoor screenings of the most recent episodes of 90210 and Melrose Place; a performance by Later Days, a pop-rock band led by Pepperdine student John Faratzis; appetizers catered by The Sunset Restaurant; cake donated by Continental Bakery; 90210″ and “Melrose place”-themed mock-tails; a red carpet and a professional photographer.
The first 150 people to arrive get free food. Prizes will be raffled off to the people that remain until the end of the event including T-shirts signed scripts and possibly a tour of the CW set. Free key chains will also be distributed.
The official PRSSA Web site describes the association’s aim: “to cultivate a favorable and mutually advantageous relationship between students and professional public relations practitioners.”
The Communication Division offers a public relations major for undergraduates that are interested in the discipline. That being said the PRSSA is not just for people whose majors deal with the Communications Division. Anyone who wishes to truly tap into the potential of a quality college education can take away something from the PRSSA according to PR Firm Director and PRSSA President Rachel Friedman.
“Don’t think that just because you aren’t a PR major you can’t get something out of PRSSA she said. Friedman, a graduate student here on campus, came to Pepperdine last year intent on a career in communication. However, the previous branch of PRSSA had just disbanded and its former adviser had left the university. Bent on reinstating PRSSA at Pepperdine, Friedman started the organization up again, offering unique career experiences to students on campus.
PRSSA events range from resume writing and interview preparation to guest lectures and field trips. This school year, Pepperdine’s PRSSA members will visit E! Entertainment Studios in Los Angeles as part of an educational learning experience. Also, PRSSA members will be attending the 2009 National Conference conveniently located in San Diego, Calif.
I’ve heard some people talk about it on campus. I’m really interested in what PRSSA has to offer said freshman Carly Trixilyn Veneracion.
PRSSA will meet multiple times a week, something unique to Pepperdine’s program. Most PRSSA groups at other colleges around the country will meet once or twice a month. Pepperdine’s group typically meets three times a week and at different times of the day in order to accommodate the wide range of its members’ schedules.
We want to make every event on campus a big deal Knudsen-Schule said.
