Both Malibu Canyon Road and Pacific Coast Highway between Topanga
Canyon Boulevard and Big Rock Drive are back open today, relieving much
traffic in the area following the latest thunderstorms.
Malibu Canyon Road was reopened Saturday around 6 p.m. after being
closed between Piuma Road and Civic Center Way since early Tuesday
morning due to a rock and mudslide. The Los Angeles County Department
of Public Works worked feverishly to reopen the road and ease the
congestion that has plagued Kanan Road, the only other access to Malibu
through the Santa Monica Mountains, but were delayed by unstable earth
and rock.
Pacific Coast Highway was also open as of Friday evening, and will
remain one lane in both directions while a ruptured water main near
Topanga Canyon is repaired.
The California Highway Patrol was prepared to reopen Pacific Coast
Highway Friday morning following a landslide near Topanga Canyon
earlier in the week, but a water main break caused further delay in the
reopening of the road.
After the water flow to Malibu was shut off after the break, residents
were left with just the water from area reservoirs. The public works
department is still asking residents to conserve water during this time
as they continue to try and repair the pipe.
Topanga Canyon Boulevard remains open to residents only and Decker
Canyon Road remains closed indefinitely. Delays are expected on both
Kanan and Malibu Canyon Roads.
