Pepperdine University’s School of Public Policy unveiled a brand new piece of art Thursday. The work celebrates the flag display put on by Pepperdine students every year in commemoration of Sept. 11.Artist Robert I. Weingarten compiled pictures of the display of flags into one massive collage and superimposed them over images from 9/11.”It’s called translucent composite portraiture said Weingarten, whose art has been on display all over the world, including Washington Museum and the Smithsonian. He had seen the flag display a few times before and had been extremely moved, Weingarten said.Weingarten pulled the black drape from his art alongside James R. Wilburn, dean of the School of Public Policy. I can’t think of a more appropriate place [for the art] than the School of Public Policy said Weingarten, who befriended Wilburn more than 30 years ago.Approximately 30 people gathered for the unveiling of Flags 9/11 in the Henry and Virginia Braun Center. Faculty, students and friends of Weingarten attended the event. It’s a really profound picture and it’s interesting how the newspaper pictures in the back are placed said Lindsay Kimbro, a first-year School of Public Policy student.Weingarten is currently working on a new series of translucent composite portraiture. He plans to ask major American government officials what represents them and then compile that into a translucent composite portrait.
