When it comes to movies, this year has been a grand one. From Iron Man” to “Changeling Indiana Jones 4” to “Madagascar 2 all genres have had great representation. And, these last two months will finish the year on a high note, with great movies lined up until the end of 2008.
Twilight released Nov. 21
Thousands are sitting on the edge of their seats as Twilight” is only hours away. Best known as a popular book series by author Stephanie Meyer “Twilight” is the captivating story of love self-discovery and vampires.
This movie is about a young girl Isabella “Bella” Swan (Kristen Stewart “In the Land of Women”) who has always been different. After struggling to fit in at her high school in Arizona Bella is sent to live with her father in the small dreary town of Forks Wash. What seems like a new and mundane life quickly changes when Bella meets Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”). He is charming passionate exciting – not to mention a vampire.
As Edward struggles to fight his vampire habits while falling deeply in love with Bella the soul mate for which he has waited 90 years a new clan of vampires comes to town threatening their way of life.
Sophomore Blair Berger said she is thrilled to see this upcoming film.
“I’m excited to see if this set of movies does as well as ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Lord of The Rings'” Berger said. “I think it will be – this seems to have a huge following. I’m really excited to see it.”
This much-anticipated thriller is bound to make one cry scream and lose sleep waiting for the next installment of the series.
Four Christmases released Nov. 26
This holiday comedy appears to be the next family classic, but do not expect just presents and seasonal cheer. Four Christmases” is the story of the happily married and successful couple Kate (Reese Witherspoon “Sweet Home Alabama”) and Brad (Vince Vaughn “Wedding Crashers”).
Junior Kara Monroe said she is a big fan of Vaughn and Witherspoon and thinks they have great on-screen chemistry.
“It looks pretty cute and funny Monroe said. I think it has potential to be a little stupid though. Those romantic holiday comedies are hard to take seriously.”
After happily avoiding the stereotypical Christmas family gathering for years Kate and Brad were anticipating their exotic island Christmas vacation. However Santa deals them a different card on Christmas morning – as all flights are delayed due to a snow and fog storm. Kate and Brad are then forced to attend not two but four Christmas family reunions.
As childhood memories and mortifying moments are remembered Kate and Brad begin to share different experiences. While Brad has one foot out the door waiting to free himself of family Kate starts to realize that maybe her family’s eccentric ways are not as bad as she had always thought. This flick is sure dsfto make one appreciate what makes every family different around the holidays.
“Australia” Nov. 26
Nicole Kidman (“Moulin Rouge”) and Hugh Jackman ( “X-men”) may have given the performances of their careers in the upcoming drama “Australia.” The story starts on the brink of World War II Lady Sarah Ashley played by Kidman a wealthy English aristocrat travels to “Australia” to explore the massive land she inherited. She meets a rugged local Jackman who convinces her to embark on a passionate journey to save the land she inherited. Along the way they discover the beautiful continent in a new way but also encounter the bombing of Darwin the city that was bombed by the same Japanese forces that attacked Pearl Harbor.
“The Spirit” Dec. 25
If all the new movies left in 2008 seemed a little too emotional or dramatic – be sure to check out “The Spirit which opens on Christmas day. An adaptation of Will Eisner’s graphic novels, The Spirit” is not just another superhero remake with thrilling performances from Scarlett Johansson (“Match Point”) Eva Mendes (“Hitch”) and many others
Sophomore Taylor Moore said he cannot wait for the film to be released.
“I’m excited to see an action movie that isn’t about a typical comic book hero Moore said. We need a few action movies during the holidays.”
And action is what the movie is all about. Denny Colt (played by Gabriel Macht “Because I Said So.”) fakes his own death in order fight crime in the dark. Because every superhero needs a nemesis “The Octopus” (played by Samuel L. Jackson) has plans to stop the crime-fighting Spirit. Killing all who see his face the Octopus wants to kill those living in Central City. As if bad guys are not enough to deal with the Spirit encounters a handful of beautiful women who try to seduce him throughout the film. Packed full of action violence and even some steamy love scenes “the Spirit” is sure to please.
“Frost/Nixon” Dec. 5
“Frost/Nixon based on the Tony-award winning play, is perhaps one of the most anticipated movies of 2008. The movie depicts the shocking interview between former President Richard Nixon (Frank Langella, Superman Returns”) and famed British television personality David Frost (Michael Sheen “Blood Diamond”). After remaining silent for three years about his resignation from office in the wake of the Watergate scandal of 1977 Nixon was ready to set the record straight. “Frost/Nixon” recreates the historic interview and the weeks surrounding it where a former commander in chief and a journalist dodge questions and convictions and ultimately discover truths about the scandal America and each other. A fast-paced political drama “Frost/Nixon” is sure to rake in the awards and respect this season.
